6 Ways to Deal With Menstrual Cramps

6 Ways to Deal With Menstrual Cramps

Cramps are the worst. Period.

If you find yourself in the fetal position when “that” time of the month comes, then this post is for you. Here are 6 of my go to ways to deal with menstrual cramping.

1. Get Moving

Go for a walk or do some light yoga or stretching. Movement will encourage blood flow and lessen the intensity of the cramping pain. It can also distract you from the pain and give you something else to focus on.

2. Heat

Apply a heating pad or hot water bottle to the abdomen. This again will encourage blood flow and help to relax the tension in the muscles and organs. It feels really great too!

3. Supplement with Magnesium

Due to heavy blood loss, magnesium is also lost from the system. Magnesium is key to proper muscle function and without it, puts us at risk of increased muscle tension and… cramping! See my post on the super powers of magnesium here!

4. Drink Plenty of Water

Staying hydrated is always important, but cannot be discounted during this time. Water will help to keep the muscles relaxed and help flush out any inflammation associated with cramping.

5. Hop on a Foam Roller

Foam rolling is a great way to relax muscles, up blood flow and soothe aches and pains, including those that come with cramps. See my post on proper foam rolling here!

6. Use an Over The Counter NSAID

Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory medication (such as ibuprofen, naproxen or diclofenac) can help to relieve pain and decrease inflammation, allowing you to get on with your day. Be sure to read and follow all the labels and instructions and consult with your doctor before using any medication.

If your cramping is too painful to tolerate or you experience any of the following, be sure to consult with your family doctor.

-Pain lasting longer than your period

-You have a fever and or nausea

-You are bleeding more than normal

-You think you may be pregnant
