Floss Like a Boss: 5 Benefits of Flossing Daily

In celebration of my baby sister receiving confirmation today of her registration as a Dental Hygienist and her recent graduation from the UBC Dental Hygiene degree program, I have asked her to make a guest blog post on why flossing is so important!

 

Floss Like a Boss: 5 Benefits of Flossing Daily

Everybody knows that flossing can be quite the chore, especially when you’re running late or have a million other things on your mind. But did it ever occur to you that by not flossing you might be putting your body and bank account at risk?

5 reasons why flossing your teeth can have a positive impact on you as a whole.

1. Gets between your contact points

Some people believe that brushing alone is good enough to maintain oral health. Although brushing your teeth twice a day goes a long way in maintaining your oral health, you’re missing a very important area; between your teeth! Floss can get between your contact points (where your teeth touch, causing no spacing), which can be a great place for bacteria/food/plaque to harbor. By flossing daily, you are removing the bacteria that has accumulated throughout the day.

2. Cost of dental appointments goes waaaayy down

By getting to those hard-to-reach areas between your teeth with floss, you are decreasing your likelihood of getting interproximal dental caries (cavities that form between your teeth) due to plaque sitting on those surfaces for a prolonged amount of time. Flossing also gets rid of the bacteria that can harbor under your gum line, which can cause gum diseases such as Gingivitis and Periodontitis. When you decrease your chances of getting cavities and gum disease, you will then decrease your amount of visits and your bill at your dental office.

3. Can get rid of bad breath

Because flossing removes the hidden food particles that are stuck between your teeth, you are reducing the chance of bacteria/plaque forming causing bad breath. When bacteria sits on your teeth for too long it can start to multiple and eventually give off a bad odor. So if you have a big date or interview coming up and want to make a good impression, here is one way to do so.

4. Improves your gum health

Many people avoid flossing because it causes their gums to bleed. Well, this is a main indicator that there may be some kind of gingivitis happening in your mouth. I know your gums probably feel very sore a day or two after you’ve flossed regularly for a few days in a row, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Once you’ve made flossing part of your oral hygiene regime, your gums will stop bleeding and feeling sore because you have removed the bacteria that was causing this to happen.

And last, but certainly not least!

5. It may reduce your chance of other diseases

The bacteria sitting in your mouth may work its way into the bloodstream if not removed. When this bacteria gets into the bloodstream it could cause inflammation of the blood vessels possibly causing hypertension and cardiovascular problems. More research stills needs to be done on this topic, but there has definitely been many other links between oral health and overall health that are very important.

So next time you think about skipping out on flossing, remember how many great benefits it can actually have on you!
